About WordPhoto Productions Inc.
I’m an award-winning photographer with more than two decades of experience in print and digital media. Over the years my spot news, feature and sports photography has earned six Canadian Awards of Excellence and six Canadian Press awards nominations.
Building on a food column I wrote for the Saint John Times Globe from 1997 to 2001, I have channelled that experience into writing online at my blog, foodfunk.ca. The site is popular with foodies and non-cooks alike because of its light-hearted approach to mixing it up in the kitchen. It was nominated in the “Best Blog” category at the Inaugural Salty’s, Saint John’s Social Media Awards in February 2011.
As a freelance photographer, I’m covering a wide variety of subjects for media and corporate clients. My photography portfolio can be viewed at michaelhawkins.ca
I’m an award-winning journalist. I have won an Atlantic Journalism Award for political commentary, a National Newspaper Award as a member of an investigative news team and an Ontario Newswire Award as a new journalist (I call it the Jimmy Olsen Rookie of the Year).
At the New Brunswick Telegraph Journal I was a business and news writer, then editor and a political columnist. I am the former Atlantic correspondent for Time Magazine (Canada) and have provided political analysis about Atlantic Canada on a number of radio and television shows including Politics with Don Newman, Information Morning and Radio Noon.
From 2003 to 2005 I had the pleasure to work with Dr. John McLaughlin, then president of the University of New Brunswick in the creation of the Next NB project and its offshoot, the 21 Leaders for the 21st Century program.
In 2010, I was the Executive Director of Saint John 225, Saint John, New Brunswick’s year-long anniversary celebration. The city was a designated Cultural Capitals of Canada Community in 2010 and received significant federal funding to create a year-long celebration of arts and culture and heritage.
I recently completed the Propel ICT accerlator program and am now developing Wicked Ideas, a digital media company that will aim to change the conversation with regard to social license and other initiatives.
